What this tool does

Base64 writes binary data using only plain text characters, so a file can be pasted into JSON, HTML, CSS or an email. Encoding turns a file into that text; decoding turns the text back into the exact original file.

How it works

  1. Choose Encode to turn a file into Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into a file.
  2. Upload the file, or paste the Base64 / data URL text.
  3. Copy the result or download the decoded file.
Example: Encode a 2 KB "icon.png" with the data URL option on and paste "data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KG…" straight into an <img src> or CSS background — or paste that string into Decode to get icon.png back.
Yes. The base64 encoder is completely free, with no signup, no watermark, and no limit on how many times you use it.
No installation is needed — it runs entirely in your browser, on desktop or mobile, and works the same way on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.
Any file type can be encoded (images, PDFs, fonts, audio and so on). Decoding accepts plain Base64, URL-safe Base64 and full data URLs (data:…;base64,…), and recognises common types such as PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, PDF and ZIP from the content.
No. Your files are read and processed inside your browser and never leave your device, so nothing is stored, shared, or used for anything else.
Yes — "base64 encoder" and "file to base64 converter" describe the same task. This page is built to handle that search directly, without redirecting you elsewhere.
